Spirit Week Recap
by Stefanie Moscati
We’ve got spirit, yes we do…right? Every year to get students pumped up for the homecoming game and homecoming dance, we have Spirit Week. It consists of days like Twin Day, Class Color Day, and Spirit Day. This year, due to the fact that Homecoming was on Halloween and Spirit “Week” itself was limited to just three days, some HHS students had to get creative—and that landed them in a little trouble.
First, many students believed that the themes needed to be much better. They missed days from previous years, such as Lazy Day, Mix-Match Day, and Tie Dye Day. And, of course, the theme-less Monday and Tuesday annoyed many.
As a result, some seniors took action into their own hands this year. They sent and forwarded text-messages to senior friends saying what to do for Monday and Tuesday that week.
An announcement was made on Monday asking for teachers to check students for dress code violators. At least two students were both sent to the office. “They just don’t appreciate our spirit!” said senior Jackie Tremblay (who, for the record, did not violate the dress code). Three students were even sent home for their ‘spirit’.
If students knew there could be consequences such as detentions or dismissal, why did they do it? Tremblay and senior Melissa McNamara agreed that it was because their senior week was boring and the students in trouble just wanted to have some fun.
The administration’s actions were not unwarranted, though.
“It seems as if we’ve gone away from Spirit Week. I don’t really see what dressing in pajamas has to do with our school spirit,” said Mr. Weber. Perhaps it just invites students to do outrageous things: guys have worn skirts and dresses, people have worn capes and wigs, and girls have worn bathing suit bottoms on the outside of their shorts.
Many underclassmen thought that those two days were funny—but don’t want aftermath to affect the future of Spirit Week. Why were two days even taken away? According to Mr. Weber it wasn’t because of students misbehaving. “We reduced the days because it fell right at the end of the quarter.”
Both Mr. Weber and Mr. Taylor evaluate things every year. They decide whether they should react to what has happened or try to gradually change it to make it better the next year. For those of you worried about losing Spirit Week in the future, it place before Homecoming does not seem endangered.
“Only a few kids have really misbehaved, but we’ve taken care of it all,” said Mr. Weber. “We should be having it next year.”

I know its a bit late to comment on this, but i think we should just drop the whole Spirit Week stuff. Its a classic fail and a lot of people may have the “spirit” but a lot of people don’t and they have to deal with all this nonsense becuz of what? A stupid game or a dance?! Who cares? I dont//:
